A New Home in Utah
How It Began • The Arrival • A New Home in Utah
We were a very small organization when almost overnight - with the help of Best Friends Animal Society and the rescue in Reno, Nevada - we became the largest rabbit sanctuary in the country. Three years later, however, we struggled financially every day due to that rapid growth.
As we explored ways to continue to accomplish our mission, one alternative came up through our relationship with Best Friends. This alternative had never been an option in the past, but Best Friends found room at their sanctuary for our beloved Reno rabbits. When all of our options were reviewed, this opportunity made the most sense.
The decision and move happened very quickly but we knew it was the right thing for all of the animals. The rabbits have settled in Kanab, Utah (read more)– with rabbit runs and shelters keeping them safe, misting systems keeping them cool, and mountain fresh air. While we truly miss them, we are very confident the rabbits are being well cared for.
Our biggest expenses were related to the care of the Reno rabbits, costing us almost 80% of what we take in annually. Neither we nor Best Friends ever anticipated the health issues and other challenges the Reno rabbits would experience. Unfortunately, with donations being down and costs having risen, we fell short of our financial needs to survive and operate as a sound organization. It was a business decision, yes -- but it was also in the best interest of the animals. If one day we found we could no longer operate, the alternative could be much worse for all the animals at our sanctuary.
We are able to follow through on our mission to help domestic rabbits. We discovered our limits, and accumulated a great deal of knowledge over those three years. We are positioned as a professional leader and resource in the animal rescue world. That work will continue and we will focus all of our efforts on behalf of our beloved bunnies.
Thank you for your continued support and for giving the bunnies in our care hope for the future!
