The Arrival
How It Began • The Arrival • A New Home in Utah
On Tuesday, September 5th, 2006, the moment GLRS had been anxiously awaiting for arrived! Two trucks carrying very precious cargo pulled into the GLRS driveway. Shortly thereafter, Best Friends and GLRS volunteers were busily unloading the trucks. It was wonderful meeting our 511 new residents!

Some of the rabbits came running out of their carriers like there was no tomorrow! Wanting to stretch their legs after their 72-hour journey, ready to check out their new surroundings, there was nothing stopping them. Others needed a little gentle coaxing to come out and explore their new home.
Um... what's that green stuff?!
The perimeter of their field was dirt when they arrived, a result of digging trenches for the fencing. When they started exploring outside, a large number of the rabbits stayed on this dirt area, not quite sure what to make of all that green stuff!
But after getting more comfortable, some of the more adventurous rabbits starting heading out into the lush, green field, taking experimental nibbles. "Hey, this stuff tastes pretty good! And look, there's lots of neat places to hide too! Come on guys!!" Pretty soon more and more rabbits were going into the grassy areas. It was wonderful to look out on the field and see so many hopping, happy, munching rabbits! In some spots the grass was so tall all you could see were pairs of ears sticking up above the greenery.
We had never seen so many rabbits together in one place, but we must say, the sight was as magical as we had imagined.
108 more Reno Rabbits call Great Lakes Rabbit Sanctuary home!
On August 18th, 2007, 108 additional rabbits from the Reno rescue arrived at the sanctuary. Though Best Friends had found a home for them, unfortunately it did not work out. When GLRS heard of the situation, we let Best Friends know the rabbits would be welcome here in Michigan. So after some negotiations, pen building, and a three-day truck ride for the rabbits, 108 more Reno rabbits were happily hopping around the sanctuary.
