The Reno 500
During the winter of 2006 Best Friends Animal Society rescued over 800 rabbits from a one-acre piece of property in Reno, Nevada. Before Best Friends could spay and neuter all these rabbits, the number increased to 1600! Can you imagine having to place 1600 rabbits?
During the spring, the Board of Great Lakes Rabbit Sanctuary began talking with Best Friends, expressing our interest in helping. At first we offered to take 300 rabbits, then that got boosted to 500. In return, Best Friends covered veterinary and feed costs for the first 90 days, and they spent several weeks at the sanctuary renovating a barn and erecting fencing to create two large rabbit pastures. The target date for the rabbits arrival was Labor Day.
A caravan of two air-conditioned trucks drove straight through from Reno to Great Lakes Rabbit Sanctuary in Willis, Michigan. We were so excited to be able to welcome the rabbits to our farm and couldn't wait to sit in the middle of the pasture surrounded by 500 rabbits!
In the eleven years Great Lakes Rabbit Sanctuary has been operating, never did we imagine that we would be able to house so many animals. We feel blessed with the generosity of our supporters, without whom none of this would be possible.
