Uno
Suffering is something a black and white bunny named Uno knows a lot about. When Best Friends Animal Society brought him to GLRS with 510 of his relatives, he gained our immediate sympathy when only his left ear could perk up at us, his right one having been torn off in a fight. Like Gabe, another of our wonder-story rescues, he became a sort of GLRS mascot, even earning a photo in the local paper.
Uno was only in his new home here for a few days, when territories were being established, that we found he had been bullied by another bunny and received a nasty gouge above his right eye. We brought him into the new bunny hospital Best Friends built for us next to the Reno yard and successfully treated his wound. Not long after that, he was brought in a second time for a minor nose wound.
By the time his wounds had healed completely, Uno’s sweet disposition had worked its magic. We decided he was too adoptable to put back out into the Reno yard. (Not to mention the fact that we couldn’t bear to see him with yet another injury, if one occurred.)
He wasn’t in with the adoptable bunnies for more than a couple of weeks when we noticed a white dot inside the pupil of his eye, followed a few days later by an orange-colored spot. We took him to the vet, who diagnosed it as a pasteurellosis infection, giving us the heartbreaking news that his eye would eventually have to be removed. Uno was turning out to be true to his name - not only did he have one ear, but now he would only have one eye, as well.
Just when we thought poor Uno had been through it all, there was more shocking news for us when we picked him up from his hospital stay. The vet informed us that when she was prepping Uno for surgery, she discovered a questionable lump where Uno’s ear had been and, in inspecting that lump, found his entire ear canal full of infection, preventing her from completing the surgery. She further explained how he would not only need the enucleation surgery (removal of the eye), but she would need to call in a neurosurgeon to perform a bulla osteotomy as well, which would provide a means of draining the infection from the ear canal, a costly but necessary surgery.
This surprisingly sad news hit us hard, because through all of his injuries, Uno has maintained one of the sweetest attitudes of any bunny at the sanctuary, constantly asking for snuggles and giving kisses in return. He has become a favorite amongst all of us here and for him to have to go through more is weighing our spirits down.
This surgery will provide Uno with a good shot at life. We are hoping that his story will reach the hearts of all who read this, as much as Uno has touched our hearts, so that we can raise the necessary funds to help him.
